Why a local audiobook manifest packager?

W3C Audiobooks defines a JSON-LD publication manifest and reading-order packaging that retailers and accessibility workflows increasingly expect. Indie authors with finished chapter MP3/M4B folders still hand-edit schema and durations. Cloud DAISY/EPUB pipelines force multi-gigabyte uploads. This concept is schema packaging only: durations from audio, metadata from ID3, offline output. We are measuring search demand before building.

Best fit: Self-publishing audiobook authors and small indie audio studios who already have chapter files and need a W3C-style publication package.
Not for: Narrators seeking a full DAISY production suite, Audible-only workflows, or teams that need a retailer submission portal.

What the packager would do

Narrow scope on purpose. Free ffmpeg/mutagen scripts may be enough for some authors — this waitlist tests whether a maintained local packager has demand.

Chapter folder in, publication.json out

Walk a directory of chapter audio, extract durations and ID3 titles, emit W3C Audiobooks JSON-LD reading order.

Accessible HTML TOC fallback

Generate a simple linked table of contents HTML alongside the manifest for human and assistive-tech fallback.

Masters stay on disk

No cloud upload of multi-hour WAV/MP3 masters. Processing is local by design.

Does this make my audiobook EAA-compliant?

No. It only targets W3C-style publication packaging (manifest + TOC). Accessibility compliance also depends on narration quality, retailer rules, and human review. We do not certify legal compliance.

Which retailers require this format?

Requirements vary by storefront and change over time. The waitlist is testing whether authors search for and want a local packager at all — not claiming a universal mandate.

Does this guarantee the intended outcome?

No. The concept should state its limits clearly and preserve human review wherever judgment is required.
